Passwords

Posted by tehkenny on November 14, 2008

Worried about Passwords?

I used to have a great password. Easy to remember and everything. Then I went for a crappier Password.

I’ve never had my password phished and Only had my MySpace changed when I remained logged in somewhere.

But if you’re worried about this sort of thing, MakeUseOf recently got hacked and afterword he posted How To Create Strong Passwords That You Can Remember Easily. It’s awesome.

Eliminating Social Media Insanity

Posted by tehkenny on November 14, 2008

FriendFeed’s rooms are just one solution to just one kind of social media insanity. You have 3 or 4 different websites where you submit and comment etc… different stuff that you think your readers might be interested in. So you want just one feed? Here’s two ways.

  1. Make a new semi-private room where only you can post.
  2. Import all of your news-sharing feeds. (Reader, reddit, SocialMedian, Tumblr, posterous, (ugh) digg, mixx, etc…)
  3. Put that feed on your website.

The other?

  1. Subscribe in your Google Reader to your feeds.
  2. Tag those feeds with “read”.
  3. Share that feed.
  4. Put the link to that feed on your site.

Here’s mine.

Subscribe to my feed, please! I promise I’ll be good!

Twitter: A Place to be Stupid

Posted by tehkenny on November 11, 2008

Twitter is now Myspace: Everyone’s there and it really doesn’t serve any practical purpose.

For messages, it’s crap. For conversation, it’s crap. For direct messages, it’s crap. For sharing, it’s crap. For profiles, it’s crap. It does a million things, none of them well. But it DOES all of those things so we stick around. That’s the same reason people stay on MySpace. It does all of those things but poorly and you might as well have one cause everybody’s there.

When you join a new service it needs to be for a reason. “I will use this service for X, Y and Z and only for X, Y and Z.” But nobody seems to use twitter with any kind of purpose. it’s just a catch-all place to lazily throw out… something.

But really, does anyone actually use twitter for it’s stated purpose “What are you doing?” I can’t find anyone who uses it for one stated purpose. And that’s stupid. It’s become Myspace For the geekset. A place to be stupid.

Tag-blogging.

Posted by tehkenny on November 9, 2008

Simply everything.

Just a full blog, a “status” blog, and one “sharing blog” (and a Friendfeed) that should be all the average joe needs in terms of blog posting.

Tagging is so important for things like this.

1. Use Posterous.com.
2. Tag your posts easily.
3. Set up special tags for things like:

Short Blogs – Shorter than a blog post, longer than a tweet. On all the stuff that would sound stupid on your blog.

Round-ups – You find stuff all over the place. Sometimes too much to post individually. Pick the best and Throw the rest into a folder marked “round up” and when you get enough stuff, post it.

Song lists – Sonetimes one song won’t do or doesn’t warrant a single post on it’s own. Folder and then dump you tube videos and what not when you get enough to make a good mix-tape of stuff.

You’ll know. I don’t know what you’ll need this kind of tagging for, you don’t know yet.

4. Post links to the tags in your posterous sidebar with a brief explaination of what they are about.

No, they don’t become seperate RSS feeds. So make these posts worth it, anyway.
